Walter Bob Smith Casbeer, age 99 and 6 months, was born January 20, 1925 to Edgar Clarence (Buddy) Smith and Flora Agnes Judkins. The youngest of three children, Walter Bob passed away August 12, 2024. She grew up on the family ranch in China Creek Community, attending China Creek School 1st grade through 8th grade and graduating from San Saba High School in 1943. Walter Bob and Jack Alexander Casbeer were married August 8, 1945, in San Saba, when he returned home on leave from the United States Navy, while serving during World War II. They began their life farming and ranching on their land between Harkeyville and Algerita and built a lifelong partnership lasting 64 years. After Jack passed away December 7, 2009, Walter Bob continued to live on the family farm.
Walter Bob loved the Lord, believed the bible, received Jesus Christ as her Savior early in life and was baptized in the San Saba River as a teenager. She began her day reading her bible and enjoyed sitting in her rocker early in the morning ready to catch the best light from the window. She worked jigsaw puzzles, word search puzzles, wrote letters, and kept a daily journal for many years! She enjoyed outdoor work in vegetable and flower gardens-especially loved trees and planted many throughout the years. She enjoyed harvesting pecans and continued picking up and cracking and shelling them even up until age 96. She was a gifted seamstress and loved to quilt and crochet. She filled her home with her oil painted landscapes and flowers.
Although she worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 26 years (1971-1997), she and Jack enjoyed traveling with friends-visiting Mexico City, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and many interesting places around the United States.
Walter Bob is survived by one daughter, Linnise and husband Allen Arfsten of San Saba; 4 grandchildren: Robin (Larry) Hook of Midland, Ashley (Jason) of Uvalde, Monty (Davelyn) Casbeer of Corsicana and Crystal Casbeer Price of Corsicana.
