Howard Payne University issued the following statement Tuesday afternoon:
“The Howard Payne University family is saddened to announce the passing of HPU Softball head coach Ty Robinson on Friday, June 7. Coach Robinson had a medical incident in Bryan and passed away. Please join with us in praying for the Robinson family, the HPU softball team, and the HPU community during the time.”
Robinson coached one season at HPU, arriving in Brownwood after serving as head coach at Jarvis Christian University
While at Jarvis Christian, the Bulldogs led the nation in stolen bases for two seasons and hitting for one season. There, he also holds the school record for most softball wins as head coach.
Before arriving at Jarvis Christian, Coach Robinson led Colorado Northwestern Community College to its most successful season in school history.
Prior to his time at Colorado Northwestern, Robinson served as head coach at Division 1 Coppin State University, where he coached an All-American and a National Batting Champion.
He also led Marshalltown Community College in Iowa to its program-best 35 wins and set a new school mark with 16 conference wins. The team advanced to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region XI Tournament, which was also the best finish in school history.
The Lady Jackets posted a 14-25 overall record and 6-17 American Southwest Conference mark during Robinson’s season as head coach.
