Henry Burl “Hank” Greer Jr., age 80, of Early, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 18, 2024. The family will host a Celebration of Life at Victory Life Church in Brownwood at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 15, 2024.
Hank was born on October 5, 1943 in Montgomery, Alabama to Louise and Henry Greer Sr. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to West Texas. He attended Ector High School in Odessa and graduated in 1962. In 1961, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Immediately after graduation, he attended Navy Bootcamp in San Diego, California. Hank would serve his country for over 20 years before retiring in 1982. Hank was proud to have served his country; he always wore his veterans ball cap, and enjoyed finding his military “brothers/buddies” in any store or restaurant to exchange stories. In 1964, while on leave in Odessa, he met Gwen Gilbert and they were married on May 28, 1966. Together, they lived in many Military towns from Florida, to California, to Hawaii where his children, Gwendelen and Henry III were born. After his military career, he attended Odessa College receiving his Associates Degree in Business Management in 1986. He worked as a Corporate Security Guard for Texas Instruments until he retired from the workforce. One of Hank’s greatest joys was being a grandfather and great grandfather. When he became a great grandfather, he was affectionately known as “Grandpa the Great.” Hank loved to go fishing, and play card games or dominos with his children and grandchildren. Hank will be remembered as being kind, loving, joyful, speaking like Donald Duck, full of dad jokes, and being generous with his money and time. Most importantly, he was a Jesus loving, spirit filled man of God.
Hank is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gwen Greer; daughter, Gwendelen Greer Mayo and husband John; son, Henry Burl Greer III and wife Allison; grandchildren, Brylee Mayo Gover and husband Jeremy, Zackery Greer, Chloe Mayo, Zoee Greer, Ashley Brown, and Adam Brown; and great grandchildren Brantley Gover, Mayleigh Gover, Madelyn Gover, and Lauralai Gover.
