From the Texas Department of Public Safety: On Sunday, May 5 around 2 a.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a fatality crash in the city of Baird, at West 3rd and Peyton Street. During the investigation of this crash, investigators discovered that the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado pickup involved in the crash was intoxicated. The driver was identified as Ashlie Haynes, 35 years of age, from Clyde. Haynes was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and consented to provide a breath test which showed a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit of 0.08. Haynes was booked into the Callahan County Jail for driving while intoxicated. This crash is under investigation and additional charges could be filed based upon the analysis of the evidence and facts once it has been completed.
Three people were injured and three were killed in the two-vehicle collision that occurred in Callahan County. According to initial investigation, a Kia Spectra that was traveling south on Peyton Street came to a stop at a stop sign, while a Chevrolet truck was approaching the intersection on West 3rd. The Kia did not yield the right of way to the truck, causing a collision at the intersection.
Three passengers were ejected from the Kia – 18-year-old Layni Potter, 18-year-old Madi Buchanan, and a 16-year-old male – and pronounced dead at the scene. All three were from Baird.
The driver of the Kia was transported to a nearby hospital and released with non-life-threatening injuries. One additional passenger in the Kia was transported to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.
