Brownwood High School graduate Matt McCrane converted a 49-yard field goal as time expired as the D.C. Defenders rallied for a 29-28 victory over the Arlington Renegades Saturday afternoon in UFL action.
The game-winner capped McCrane’s best day as a professional kicker as he finished 3-for-3 on his attempts, also converting from 54 yards with 5:55 left in the first period and a career-long 58 yards with 12:52 left in the third quarter.
In a rematch of last year’s XFL championship game won by Arlington (0-3), the Defenders (2-1) trailed 14-3 with 4:19 left in the first half, and 28-18 with 2:08 to go in the game before completing the comeback.
For the season, McCrane is 8 of 8 on his field goal attempts with a long of 58 yards. McCrane continues to lead the league in field goals made and field goal percentage, and his 58-yarder is the second longest field goal in the league.
The Defenders are back in action at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at the Birmingham Stallions in a game that will air on FOX.
