FRISCO – The Early Lady Horns captured the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association Class 3A Division II state championship Thursday at the Coamerica Center.
The Lady Horns generated 22 points – 7 each for a pair of first-place finishes in a weight class, 5 for a runner-up finish, and 3 points for a third-place effort. The Lady Horns produced one more point than state runner-up Elkhart, which notched 21 points behind two first-place, one second-place, and one fourth-place effort.
Early’s Alexa Hernandez won the 132-pound weight class with 920 pounds lifted – 360 in the squat, 215 in the bench press and 345 in the deadlift. Hernandez lifted 90 more pounds than runner-up Emma Rutledge of Ballinger (830 pounds). Hernandez was also received the Outstanding Lightweight Squat honor and was named Best Overall Lightweight Lifter.
In the 114s, Julienne Socong placed first with 800 pounds lifted – 300 in the squat, 175 in the bench and 325 in the deadlift. Finishing right behind her in second place was Matty Boswell with 785 pounds lifted – 305 in the squat, 175 in the bench press and 305 in the deadlift.
In the 242-plus division, Rayana Barzart came in third place with 925 pounds lifted – 375 in the squat, 260 in the bench, and 290 in the deadlift. She finished behind Elkhart’s Tatum Wallace (990 pounds) and Altair Rice’s Marlena Nunn (945 pounds).
