GRAHAM – The Brownwood Lions notched their third victory during the 15th Annual Walker Stallcup Memorial tournament, fourth straight win overall, and 10th triumph of the season by a 6-2 count over Pampa Friday afternoon.
The Lions (10-4-1, 1-0) – who shutout Paradise, 5-0, and Childress, 4-0, during their first two tournament outings – rallied from a 2-0 deficit against Pampa with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Brownwood’s fourth frame featured a one-out single by Eli Hill, a walk by Jack Field and another single from Noah Gonzalez to load the bases. Austin Wright’s RBI single followed that cut the deficit to 2-1. Antonio Ybarra followed with a ground ball that turned into an error and allowed the tying run to score. Jordyn Nickereson followed with an RBI fielder’s choice that pushed Brownwood in front, 3-2. Gavin Brandstetter then came through with an RBI single for an insurance run, while David Turner followed with a two-RBI base hit up the middle for the four-run cushion.
The Lions tallied six hits – two by Brandstetter and one apiece by Turner, Hill, Gonzalez and Wright – with five of those taking place during the six-run fourth.
On the mound, Gonzalez pitched the first four innings and yielded one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Yovani Figueroa tossed the final inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and a pair of walks. Defensively, the Lions committed just one error.
Brownwood will wrap up tournament action against Wichita Falls at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, a rematch of last year’s area playoff series.
