Family Service Center will auction locally handmade quilts at a silent auction which will run through August 18th at the Family Services Center.
Betty Burleson of Brownwood loves to sew and to give gifts to others. She combined those two enthusiasms when she made 12 small quilts and donated them to Family Services Center recently. Burleson spends well over a day working on each quilt. She uses materials she has collected from sewing over several years and donations from friends to cut and design her lovely handiwork. This is the second time Burleson has given quilts to Family Services Center. In addition, last year she distributed over 300 of her handmade quilts around Brownwood to nursing homes, schools, Salvation Army and others.
“I enjoy making the quilts, and I just hope the people who get them enjoy using them as much as I enjoy making them,” said Burleson. The quilts are sized for warming a lap, covering a baby, or hanging on a wall. When asked why she donated the quilts to Family Services, she said, “With Family Services, I know they serve individuals, children and families through parenting, counseling and other programs. This is something I can do to help too.”
Family Services Center is using Burleson’s quilts as a fund raiser in a silent auction for the Parenting Store in the Family Services Center building. Clients who take parenting earn points through attendance and other activities. When their classes are completed, they can “spend” their points in the store for such items as children’s toys, parents’ night out coupons, and much more. The money from the silent auction will be used to purchase items for the Parenting Store.
Ten quilts have been attractively displayed in the resource room in the Family Services building at 901 Ave. B, Brownwood, for the silent auction. Everyone is invited to stop by and view the beautiful display as well as to put in a bid for one or more of the quilts. The silent auction will end on August 18th.
