The Brownwood Lions soccer team had a plethora of scoring opportunities in Friday night’s home opener at Gordon Wood Stadium, but were unable to find the net in a 1-0 loss to the Snyder Tigers.
“It was a frustrating game, very difficult because we had a lot of positives but we weren’t rewarded for those positives,” said Lions head coach Michael Westerman. “We worked extremely hard, we did a lot of positive things, we just weren’t able to get the ball across the line.”
The Lions (1-3-1) owned possession of the ball for much of the contest, limiting t Snyder to just a handful of scoring opportunities. But with 21:59 left in the first half, the Tigers were able to secure the lone goal of the game.
“It was a phenomenal strike and all credit to the player that scored that goal,” Westerman said. “We gave up the ball and allowed them a couple of yards of space and he snuck the ball in the upper corner just inside of the post. With a shot like that, there’s not a whole lot you can do defensively. Overall, I thought we did well defensively, they only had two or three real opportunities to score against us and they were able to convert a shot.”
As for the Lions’ inability to ring up a goal Friday night, Westerman said, “We did a lot of great things to put us in the position to score, we just were lacking in attacking third to be able to finish the ball and put it in the back of the net. That’s on us, and sometimes that’s just the draw of the game and things don’t fall your way.”
The Lions’ next action is slated for 7 p.m. Tuesday as Decatur comes calling.
