Brownwood High School (BHS) Science Department Head Kacey Humphries and Brownwood ISD (BISD) Secondary Curriculum Coordinator Kristi Owen recently presented a class on improving performance and retention in Biology at CAST (Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching). Their class focused on the concept of having fun while learning, which helps students better retain information because the process is enjoyable and memorable.

During their presentation, Humphries and Owen provided nine different games they developed to support Biology lessons and engage students in a fun way. They also demonstrated how teachers can check for understanding without having to give a quiz or worksheet. Their class emphasized the importance of making learning engaging and fun for students which boosts retention and encourages students to take risks and participate. Johna Elliott, a Brownwood Middle School Science teacher, also assisted Humphries and Owen with organization and time control during their class.

The presentation was well received by the participating teachers who commented on it being the best class they had attended, and many were excited about implementing the newly learned information in their own classes.

BISD is proud of these teachers and administrators and their work presenting a successful class at CAST. Their expertise and dedication to improving the quality of education for their students is commendable, and we look forward to them sharing more innovative ideas in the future.
