GEORGETOWN – The Howard Payne University women’s basketball turned over Southwestern University (TX) 29 times on the way to a 60-34 win Tuesday, November 14th in Georgetown, Texas.
HPU’s freshman guard Taysie Trejo recorded a career-high 17 points leading the Lady Jackets to a 26 point win this evening in a game where HPU never trailed.
The Lady Jackets opened the game on a 15-2 run led by 11 fast break points in the first quarter. With only a ten-point lead at half, HPU widened the margin in the second half outscoring the Pirates 37-21.
Howard Payne showcased a great defensive performance holding Southwestern to 25.6% shooting from the field and not allowing a single three pointer. The Lady Jackets turned 29 Pirate turnovers into 25 points as well.
HPU finished 20 of 65 from the field shooting 30.8% along with nine treys including seven in the second half.
The Lady Jackets were led by a 17-point performance from Taysie Trejo followed by Asia Mitchell and Aja Holmes scoring eight points apiece. Rounding out the top scores for HPU was Taliyah Bess recording seven points. Kiara Green totaled four points, seven rebounds, and seven assists as well.
Southwestern was led by Lauren Stephens with eight points.
The Lady Jackets will look to continue their hot start as they take on Austin College Monday, November 20th at the historic Brownwood Coliseum with tip-off at 5 PM.
