The Howard Payne University athletic department on Wednesday announced the hiring of Ty Robinson as Head Softball Coach.
With college head coaching experience at the DI, NAIA, and Junior College levels, Ty Robinson comes to Howard Payne from Jarvis Christian University where he served as the head coach.
“We are thrilled to have Coach Robinson as our new softball coach!” said Hunter Sims director of athletics. “He brings a wealth of experience, success, and accomplishments as a head coach. He is a proven winner, and we are excited he is a Yellow Jacket.”
Before Jarvis Christian, Coach Robinson was the head coach at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely, CO leading them to their most successful season in school history.
Prior to his time at Colorado Northwestern, Robinson served as head coach at NCAA Division 1 Coppin State University in Baltimore, MD, where he coached an All-American and a National Batting Champion.
He also led Marshalltown Community College in Iowa to its program-best 35 wins and set a new school mark with 16 conference wins. The team advanced to the semifinals of the NJCAA Region XI Tournament, which was also the best finish in school history.
“I would like to thank President Hines, Vice President Nate Penland, Athletic Director Hunter Sims, and Assistant AD Troy Drummond for blessing me with this opportunity,” said Ty Robinson. “We will look to build an exceptional Softball program and look forward to extending the tradition of excellence. Most importantly I’m excited & blessed to use this sport as a platform through Christ.”
Robinson served as the associate head coach at Division I Mississippi Valley State University for two seasons where he helped lead the Delta Devils to 60 wins over two seasons, including the Southwest Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season and conference title in 2012.
Robinson’s coaching career began at Rainy River Community College in International Falls, MN, where he helped lead the Voyageurs to a conference championship and a fourth-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. Robinson and the staff were awarded the Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award.
Following his stint at Rainy River CC, Robinson received his first head-coaching job at McCook Community College in Nebraska; helping lead the Indians to a program record 30 wins in 2008.
Robinson received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Northern State University (SD) in 2003. The Chicago native is currently working toward a master’s degree in sports studies from Bemidji State University.
