EARLY – The Class 3A Division II No. 9 Comanche Indians completed a sweep of Brown County foes Friday, posting their second shutout in as many weeks with a 57-0 triumph over the Early Longhorns.
Coming off a 70-0 win over Bangs last week, Comanche (3-0) generated 585 total yards against Early (1-2), which suffered its second straight defeat since opening the season with a 52-10 triumph over Bangs.
Indian quarterback Layden Welch completed 9 of 11 passes for 266 yards with four touchdowns, while also rushing for 28 yards and two more scores. Kyler Beaty grabbed six receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns, Cayden Davis pulled down two catches for 74 yards and scored once, and Raymond Crossland snared a 56-yard scoring reception.
On the ground, Colt Schwertner led the Comanche attack with 264 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, while Davis added a touchdown and 4 yards on two carries. Returning all-state running back Sawyer Wilkerson was limited to three carries for 23 yards.
The Longhorn offense was held to just 116 total yards – 91 through the air and 25 on the ground – with one turnover.
Early’s Weston Barton completed 7 of 17 passes for 91 yards with a pick, as leading receivers included Andrew Reedy with five grabs for 47 yards while Ki Houston pulled down a 37-yard reception and Reece Middleton caught a 7-yard pass.
On the ground for Early, Griffin Cheslock rushed for 17 yards on 11 carries, Kaleb Ozuna added 7 yards on two rushes, and Barton picked up 1 yard on four carries.
Early will attempt to regroup next week as it visits Hamilton (2-1), which picked up 20-14 victory over Santo Friday. Meanwhile, Comanche targets a fourth straight win at home against Class 2A Division I state-ranked Tolar, which tumbled against Dallas Christian, 37-6, Friday night.
