From her business, to serving on the Brownwood ISD Board of Trustees, to working as the secretary for Eastlawn Memorial Park, 38-year-old Amary Doremus puts her heart into everything in which she’s involved.
“Everything I do is from my heart,” she said. “I just love being able to help and be there as much as I can.”
Doremus – a 2003 graduate of Brownwood High School and 2012 graduate of Howard Payne University – was introduced to the BISD Board of Trustees in February 2021 when she was appointed to fill the vacated Place 6. Then in November 2022, she was re-elected to the position.
“When Dr. (Lisa) Fowler moved out of the district and was no longer Place 6, Michael Cloy reached out to me and said my name had been brought up a couple of times,” Doremus said. “We talked through the process and he told me he’d get back with me in a few days and encouraged me to think about it. To be honest at the time I wasn’t as involved with the school as I thought I should be. My kids were young, in elementary school, and I’ve always had a big heart for kids, especially those underprivileged and maybe don’t have the best home life, so I thought if I could better a child’s life by making decisions that would be better for them, how could I not do this?”
Regarding her decision to stick with the Board of Trustees after her appointment, Doremus said, “Last November my place was open and I’ve really enjoyed it and being able to work with the others. I think it’s great that Codie (Smith) and Justin (Posey) have kids in school and the other half of the board has kids that have already gone through. You have to have both, seasoned members and ones that have kids in the system.”
As for the most rewarding part of serving on the BISD Board of Trustees, Doremus said, “I didn’t realize until I was on the board what all the school district does. I’ve really enjoyed being a voice because words can be misconstrued. There’s assumptions of things that aren’t necessarily the truth. Everything I do whether it’s my home life, my work life, I lead with my heart so I could never be for something or support something if it wasn’t 100 percent the right thing. Being that person, that voice, with no hidden agendas or anything like that, I can make sure the right things are being done.”
Doremus also praised BISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Young for making the initial transition onto the board easy.
“Dr. Young is absolutely amazing,” Doremus said. “I couldn’t imagine being on the board without him. His communication is great. Every time I have any issues I hear back from him within a few hours. If he doesn’t have the answer he’ll find it and get back to me and I want to thank him for that for sure.”
Doremus is also involved heavily with Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early.
“Our family has owned Eastlawn for over 60 years,” she said. “Ever since my grandmother passed away I have helped my aunt and uncle out there. I am the secretary so I go out there a couple of days a week and do book work and deeding. Just being able to have my hand in something my grandparents did means so much to me.
“With the cemetery, being able to help families with one of the hardest times and to be a light to them, to be positive, to be really a familiar face, it’s a good feeling. There’s been so many times I’ve had friends lose their spouse so I’m glad they can have me on the other end, especially at the cemetery”
Career-wise, Doremus is a top leader with Plunder Design.
“I run a jewelry business but it’s so much more than that,” Doremus said. “We are a network marketing direct sales company. I’ve been with them for almost seven years. I lead almost 1,000 women and most people think we just sell jewelry but to me it’s so much more than that. I’ve been able to literally change women’s lives. I’ve helped a young lady who is 26 be able to provide for her family. I’ve helped others with children be able to work from home. Some people think it’s just a side hustle but it’s so much more than that. We bring in extra income for families and help them provide for dance lessons, travel ball, things like that.”
Doremus has been married to her husband Mitchell, who works at Atmos Energy, for 12 years. The couple have two sons – 11-year-old Kinsler and 10-year-old Hudson.
“We work really well together balancing everything we have going on in our lives,” Doremus said.
