Steven McCrane has announced that he is a candidate for City Council, Ward 1.
“I believe that citizens should be involved in making Brownwood a better place to live,” McCrane said. “Brownwood citizens have proven they have the positive spirit, volunteerism, care, and pride that make Brownwood the special place that it is. After many years of community involvement, I feel it is time to take the next step to serve the citizens of Brownwood, and would consider it an honor.”
Steven has been married for 21 years to Lori Harper McCrane, a descendant of a Brown County Pioneer Family, and have two children, Matthew, a freshman at Brownwood High School, and Lizzie, a 6th grader at Brownwood Intermediate School. His wife is also very involved in the community and local schools.
Steven moved to Brownwood in the first grade and Graduated from Brownwood High School with honors in 1985. He attended The University of Texas at Austin and graduated from Tarleton State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business and then went on to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston School of Allied Health Sciences and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy. “After years from home, we made the decision to move back in 1994 and wanted to make Brownwood home for our children, just as it had been for us.”
Steven is an Active Member of First United Methodist Church where he served as Staff-Parish Relations chair and usher.
After moving back to Brownwood, Steven served as Director of Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapy, as well as Managed Care at Brownwood Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and was co-director of BRMC’s Occupational Medicine program where he operated and managed multi-million dollar departments.
In 2001, he started his own company that provides billing/consulting services for physicians, hospitals, and surgery centers. He and his wife Lori also presently own rental and commercial properties in Brownwood.
Steven currently serves on the City of Brownwood Building and Standards Commission and was a committee member for the new Senior Citizens Center, planned Youth Complex, and City Water Park
He is a current Board Member of the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce and former Ambassador and is a member of the 2017 Feels Like Home Steering Committee.
In 2001, he volunteered for the First Annual Brownwood Reunion Celebration as Food Court Chair and then over the years moved on to Operations and then Overall Chair in 2005. Over the past six years, he has served on the Sponsorship Committee. “By being involved in the Brownwood Reunion Celebration over the past 9 years, I have seen the tremendous community spirit of the hundreds of volunteers that truly make Brownwood, ‘Feel Like Home’,” McCrane said.
In 2007, Steven was awarded the Brownwood Man of the Year Award by the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce and he presently serves on the Board (and former President) of the Brownwood Civic Improvement Foundation (instrumental in the initiation of the First Annual Brownwood Reunion Celebration, restoration/operation of the Depot, and securing of the land for the Great State of Texas Transportation Complex)
For many years, he chaired and assisted with the Annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular at Lake Brownwood

“Dedication, tenacity, and a sound business sense are very important qualities for a public servant,” McCrane said. “I believe that throughout my years of community service, I have demonstrated these qualities and would be honored to serve the citizens of Ward 1 and Brownwood, Texas.”
McCrane added, “Being a small business owner and property owner, and having worked for a large company, has helped to give me the experience and knowledge to serve on the Brownwood City Council. My community involvement has helped to enhance my pride and passion for Brownwood to help make it a better place to live and for others to visit.”
Darrell Haynes, current City Councilman Ward 1, recently announced that he would not seek re-election. City election day is set for May 8th.
