According to information provided by the Texas Department of Public Safety, one person was killed in a two-vehicle accident that took pace at 3:42 a.m. Friday morning on FM 2126, 1.6 miles east of Brownwood.
A 2023 Freightliner truck tractor towing a 2018 Great Dane box style semi-trailer and a 2014 Ford Fusion passenger car collided at the scene.
Francis Thomas Montagna, 79, of Early – the driver and only occupant of the Ford Fusion – was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:45 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Doug Hurt.
The two people in the Freightliner truck tractor were not injured.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the Ford Fusion was traveling south on Farm to Market Road 2126 (FM 2126). The Freightliner truck tractor was traveling north on FM 2126. In a curve of the roadway, the Ford Fusion failed to operate in its lane, crossing the center stripe striking the Freightliner truck tractor head on.
Weather conditions were clear and the road was dry.
The accident was investigated by Trooper John Hoy, Texas Highway Patrol – Brownwood. He was assisted by Sergeant Michael Thomas, Texas Highway Patrol – Brownwood; Trooper Cristobal Delgado, Texas Highway Patrol – Brownwood; Trooper Travis Hounshell, Texas Highway Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement – Brownwood; and Trooper Brandon Smedley, Texas Highway Patrol Commercial Vehicle Enforcement – Eastland.
