The Howard Payne University softball team posted two come from behind wins 7-5 and 12-10 over Sul Ross State University Friday afternoon at HPU’s Lady Jacket Field to win the American Southwest Conference series. The Lady Jackets dropped Saturday’s finale, 4-0.
In Friday action according to HPUSports,com, HPU’s Bree Cason picked up her fifth consecutive win in a 7-5 Lady Jacket victory over the Lobos. Cason allowed five runs on 10 hits in the complete game.
After a four-run fourth for HPU, the Lady Jackets put together a three-run fifth inning to gain a 7-5 lead.
HPU was led by Maddison Cason, Amber Williams, Makayla Wesley, and Zoie Garcia with two hits each. Maddison Cason and Williams each recorded triples.
Down 10-7 in Game 2 Friday going into the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Jackets used a five-run fifth to take the lead and the eventual 12-10 victory.
Heather Wineman had the no decision in the start for HPU. Wineman allowed 10 runs on 14 hits in five innings, Throwing the final two frames for HPU, Sydney West recorded the win in relief allowing just one hit.
Simonne Sanders and Madison Forrester each had three hits for HPU. Alexia Perkkio and Amber Williams each recorded three runs batted in.
Howard Payne is now 12-21 overall and 5-17 in American Southwest Conference action. The Lady Jackets are eighth in the ASC with six conference games left as the top six teams advance to the conference tournament. Howard Payne visits Concordia for a 2 p.m. Friday doubleheader and closes the series with a single game at noon Saturday.
