LUBBOCK – The Brownwood Lions are bound for the UIL Class 4A boys golf state tournament after placing third as a team at the Region I-4A tournament Thursday at Shadow Hills Golf Course, clinching one of 12 spots available for squads in the field.
The state tournament will take place May 22-23 at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland, where Brownwood has already competed once this season.
The District 6-4A champion Lions finished the two-day, 36-hole regional tournament with a 612 composite score, following an opening 305 Wednesday with a closing 307 Thursday. Brownwood held off fourth-place Monahans (622) by 10 strokes, as the Loboes made an early charge at the Lions in round two. Brownwood entered the day four shots ahead of Monahans.
Sir Bubba Jones sparked the Lions with a 146 composite score following consecutive rounds of 73, followed by 6-4A individual champion Hudson Reagan’s 153 off rounds of 78 and 75. Cobe Walker chipped in a 155 as he posted a 76 to start and a 79 to finish, while Caleb Modawell contributed a 158 as he following a round of 78 with an 80. Slayde Espinoza added a 171 with rounds of 85 and 86.
Competing as a medalist from Brownwood was Luke Gray, who tallied a two-day score of 185 with rounds of 97 and 88.
Andrews won the regional championship with a 595 team score over 36 holes, carding a 299 and 296. Canyon Randall finished as the regional runner-up with a 597 following rounds of 204 and 293.
Randall’s Wyatt Provence captured the individual regional title with a 140 composite score with rounds of 71 and 69.
