Leona Mae McCown Bowers, age 84, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2023 peacefully, with her family by her side. Her family will host a visitation from 6 to 8 pm on Thursday, April 6th at Heartland Funeral Home in Early. Funeral Services will follow at 2 pm on Friday, April 7th at the First Baptist Church in Bangs, with interment at Bangs Cemetery.
Leona was born on Tuesday, December 27, 1938 in Miles, Texas to Sanders and Olga McCown. She also graduated high school in Miles. Leona married Dalton Lloyd “Sonny” Bowers on Friday, November 30, 1956 and they began a life together that blessed them with 5 children.
Leona enjoyed sewing clothes for her children, cooking wonderful meals, especially her cakes and pies. She loved spending her time in the garden, planting flowers and doing yard work. Decorating her home and working beside Sonny on their ranch was a true joy to Leona. She enjoyed going out on the ranch with Sonny to check the cows and seeing the baby calves. Leona cared for many of her grandchildren and was always dependable. She was a room mother for all her children and member of the PTA. Leona was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Bangs, TX, and past member of the Bangs Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Leona also volunteered at Good Samaritan Ministries.
Leona is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dalton “Sonny” Bowers of Thrifty, TX; 3 daughters, Cindy Hair and husband Jody of Loris, SC, Kim DeBusk and husband Kelly of Gillette, WY, Angela Johnson and husband Carl of Big Valley, TX; son Clay Bowers and wife Heather of Thrifty, TX; brother Lindy Mason and wife Vivian of Henderson, NV; 14 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Sanders and Olga McCown; son Ricky Lloyd Bowers; father and mother-in-law Dalton & Theo Bowers; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Jim Nelson.
