The Brownwood Lady Lions capped a District 6-4A softball sweep of the Mineral Wells Lady Rams Friday night, and also captured their third league victory in four outings as they look to return to the playoffs after missing out in 2022.
On the heels of Tuesday’s 7-1 road victory over Mineral Wells, the Lady Lions notched a 4-1 victory on their home turf Friday.
Brownwood (9-9, 3-1) fell behind Mineral Wells (8-16, 0-4) in the top of the first inning as Hailey McWhorter led off with a grounder that second baseman Jeniffer Romero couldn’t flag down, then moved to second base following an errant pickoff attempt at first. A ground ball out advanced McWhorter to third, where she scored on a Tynlea Wilson pitch that got away from catcher Chloe Walls.
Mineral Wells maintained its lead until the bottom of the second inning as Kyleigh Caperton hit a grounder to shortstop, but the Mineral Wells first baseman dropped the throw to the bag. Cecilia Rodriguez then sliced an RBI triple down the right field line plate Caperton and knot the score at 1. With one out recorded, Mackenzie Welch dribbled an RBI sacrifice bunt down the first base line which allowed Rodriguez to score and stake Brownwood to a 2-1 lead.
The Lady Lions added insurance in the third as Peyton Pena drew a leadoff walk then, with two outs, Walls launched a two-run blast over the left field fence to extend Brownwood’s lead to 4-1.
Walls paced the Lady Lions’ six-hit attack with a pair to go along with her two RBIs, while Rodriguez added two hits and drove in one. Caperton later doubled and Wilson singled.
In the circle, Wilson again was sharp with just three hits and one walk allowed while recording one strikeout.
