Tony Jones was born in Brownwood, Texas on October 12th, 1955, to Albert Jones Jr. and Ella B. Diggs Jones. Tony was the sixth youngest of eight children (four sisters and three brothers). Tony attended R.F. Hardin Elementary, West Elementary, Brownwood Junior High and then Brownwood High School. He participated in several clubs and organizations and played high school football under Coach Gordon Wood. Tony graduated from Brownwood High School in 1975 and then played football for West Texas State University (West Texas A&M University) in Canyon, Texas. During this time, he met and would later marry Gwendolyn Green Jones. He eventually relocated to Howard Payne University, back home in Brownwood. Tony was hired at Superior Cable/ Superior Essex Inc. where he worked until retirement, 49 years in total. He married Gwendolyn on December 18, 1976. Tony and Gwen had two beautiful children, Jason Edwin and Kourtney Camille Jones. Following Gwen’s death, he married Sharies Bryant Jones on May 12, 2018.
Tony raised his family in Brownwood, where he would forever remain. He was very involved in the community and stayed connected with high school football through his son Jason, his nephews, and other young men who played football in the area. Tony was nominated and selected into the High School Gordon Wood Football Hall of Fame in May of 2014. As a young boy, Tony learned core principles that he followed and successfully lived by under the coaching of Gordon Wood. Values such as fair play, honest competition, teamwork, dedication to his family and community, and a loving attitude toward everything in his life. Tony loved his family deeply. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Tony had a deep passion for bass fishing. He always owned a boat and would participate competitively in bass tournaments. In his free time, if he wasn’t spending it with his family, he was on the water or riding his Harley, his second passion.
Tony was someone who would truly give you the shirt off his back. He was a “people person”, always giving and doing for others, whether it was for his family, friends, or neighbors. Tony was brutally honest and loved with all his heart. His sense of humor and quick wit will have everyone who knew and loved him smiling for years to come.
2 Timothy 4:7 describes Tony best: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
