MINERAL WELLS – The Brownwood Lions remained atop the District 6-4A baseball standings with their second road victory over the Mineral Wells Rams this season, 13-3 Tuesday night.
Brownwood (15-5, 4-1), which also knocked off Mineral Wells (6-12, 0-5) by an 11-1 count at Pratt Field on March 7, can complete the league sweep at 7 p.m. Friday when the Rams visit Morris Southall Field.
In Tuesday action, the Lions wasted no time seizing control with four runs in the first inning. Brownwood tacked on one more in the second, three in the fourth inning, and the final five in the top of the sixth frame.
The Lions’ 13-hit attack was fueled by Cole Miller, who collected three – including a two-run homer that started the scoring – and finished with seven RBIs. Miller also picked up the win on the mound, yielding one run on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks over five innings.
David Turner, Taylor Bessent and Jordyn Nickerson each finished with a pair of hits and one RBI, while Gavin Brandstetter added a hit and an RBI as well. Case Markham and Campbell Gilmore chipped in singless and Owen Huntsinger doubled to round out the attack as Brownwood also drew eight walks.
Austin Wright tossed the final inning of relief for the Lions, surrendering two runs on a pair of hits.
