The four-game District 5-4A win streaks for both the Brownwood Lady Lions and Lions came to an abrupt end Friday night in rematches with Salado.
At Gordon Wood Stadium, the Lady Lions – who were nipped by No. 12 Salado in a 2-1 road defeat on Feb. 7 – were dealt a 6-0 defeat. Brownwood (12-4-1, 6-3), which remains in third place in the league standings, had allowed just 13 goals all season and surrendered no more than four in a game this year back on Jan. 7 against Wimberley.
In Salado, a rematch of the Lions’ 2-1 home setback on Feb. 7 saw the host Eagles cruise to a 7-0 triumph the second time around. Like the Lady Lions, the Lions (10-10-1, 6-3) are still in third place in 5-4A while the seven goals allowed were the second-most this season behind only the eight surrendered to 5A Amarillo Palo Duro in tournament action Jan. 19.
The Lady Lions’ match-up against Salado saw the game remain scoreless until the 12:58 mark of the first half. There, a kick that deflected off the left upright and died just in front of the goal was put back by the Lady Eagles for the first goal of the night. By halftime, Salado’s lead had swollen to 3-0 and the Lady Eagles tacked on three second-half goals.
“This one stings a little bit,” said Lady Lions head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “Salado came out tonight and was ready to play 100 percent. The score doesn’t reflect our efforts on the field, but it’s like basketball where we have two of the best teams in the state in our district. It humbles you a little bit, but this will also better prepare us for the playoffs. Our goalie and defenders put in so much work and so many hours, so to score six goals on us you’re definitely a very good team.”
Both the Lady Lions and Lions will attempt to bounce back at home at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when they host Stephenville. Both Brownwood teams dropped their first meetings with Stephenville on the road on Feb. 10.
