Fresh off 23 three-pointers in their previous two games, the Brownwood Lady Lions weren’t quite as hot from the perimeter Tuesday afternoon at Warren Gym, but still served up plenty of points in their third straight victory, 48-26 over the Bangs Lady Dragons.
The Lady Lions (10-11) led 17-6 after one quarter and 32-15 at halftime, but suffered a hiccup in the third period as the advantage stood at 36-18 after three frames.
Brownwood shot 27 percent (16 of 59) from the floor and 14 percent (4 of 28) on three-pointers, but converted 60 percent (12 of 20) of its free throws.
Kimber Green again paced the Lady Lion offense with 11 points followed by eight each from Mady Pyle, Hannah Deen and Miranda Northcutt, five from Icess Hall, three from Olivia Ringer, two each from Kassidy Wooten and Kate Tindol, and one point from Talasia Green.
“We were a little flat and that showed in our shooting, but overall our effort was good and they were motivated to get the win,” said Lady Lions 14th-year head coach Heather Hohertz. “Some of us are under the weather a little bit, so we had to rotate some of the match-ups more than usual. And Kassidy, coming off her ankle injury, I tried to limit her a little to ease her back in before we play the Holiday Classic.”
The Lady Lions also grabbed 38 rebounds, created 15 steals, dished out eight assists and committed 13 turnovers.
“Our defense rotated pretty well,” Hohertz said. “Rebounding-wise we did a decent job. Our dribble-drive offense is looking a lot better in terms of decision making and the spacing on the floor. I’m getting real excited about how that’s looking moving into the tournament and district.”
Bangs was led by Neeley Bradley with seven points, Rylie Guerrero and Jadyn Miller with six apiece, Kasey Solis with five, and Baylor Mullins with two points.
Regarding the keys to the Lady Lions’ current three-game win streak, Hohertz said, “We’re playing both ends of the floor. We’re playing offense, we’re playing defense, and Mady and Kimber are leading us in scoring most of the games and that helps us a lot.”
The Lady Lions are off until Wednesday, Dec. 28 when they begin play in the TexasBank Holiday Classic.
Meanwhile, the next action for the Lady Dragons (8-12) is set for Dec. 27-28 at the Comanche tournament.
