The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin a major project to reconstruct and widen one mile of Austin Avenue (FM 2524) in Brownwood in late September.
The project will completely rehabilitate Austin Avenue, which is one of the community’s major streets, from Norwood Street to Brooks Avenue by widening it to four lanes, as well as rebuilding and resurfacing the roadway. The project also includes storm drains, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and signals.
Although the road will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction for the duration of the project, lanes will be narrow. The work also includes widening the bridge at Willis Creek. Starting in early October, traffic over the structure will be limited to one lane in each direction.
The project is expected to be complete by spring of 2015. Throughout construction, drivers and pedestrians are urged to use extreme caution in the work zone.
Jay Mills Contracting, Inc. of Stephenville will complete the project for about $4.7 million.
