Have you been thinking about beekeeping? Wondering how to get started? Or maybe you know someone who’s been talking about it, but just never seems to get around to taking action.
One local beekeeper wants to help.
Daniel Graham gives presentations and classes on beekeeping, and his upcoming class, Fundamentals for Beginners, will answer the most common questions: How much space do I need? Where should I put my hive? Will I get stung? And many more.
“A new hobby is fun and exciting, but it can also be confusing and intimidating,” Graham observes. “These days people learn a lot from Youtube, but it can also be helpful to just meet and talk with someone who’s been doing it for a while.”
According to Graham, some people are better suited to become beekeepers. “It helps to have a calm temperament, and not be squeamish about insects. And it takes patience and persistence, like any farm or garden venture.”
Graham purposely offers the class in the cold season. “If you plan to get started next spring, now is the time to start shopping for your equipment, and to put in an order for the bees, that will be ready for delivery or pick-up in April.”
The class is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 17, from 1 till 2:30 pm, at the Brownwood Art Center, 215 Fisk Ave. in downtown Brownwood. Please use the side door on Lee St. to enter. Parking is available on Fisk Ave. and Lee St.
Pre-registration is required. To pre-register, call 325-641-9029, or email [email protected]. The class fee is $25 per person, and children 12 or under may attend for free. If unable to attend this Saturday, send an email requesting to be notified of the next class.
