BRADY – The Brownwood Lions avenged an earlier loss to the Brady Bulldogs in the finale of the Brady tournament, but let the chance for a perfect slip away in their first game Saturday against the Rocksprings Angoras.
A short-handed Brownwood squad dropped a 64-62 decision at Brady in its second game of the season, but rolled to a 72-51 triumph in the rematch.
The Lions led 14-9 after one quarter, 25-23 at halftime, and 50-35 through three frames.
Luke Gray paced the offensive attack with 23 points trailed by Tristan Salinas with 15, Morsello Hooker with 14, Jason Jackson with six, Hayden Noe with five, Caleb Clawson with four, Hayden Proffitt with three, and Sam Bruton with two points.
The Lions’ five-game win streak was snapped by Rocksprings earlier Saturday, as Brownwood squandered a 13-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter in a 67-66 loss.
Brownwood trailed 23-21 after one quarter, led 46-36 at halftime, and carried a 61-48 into the fourth period. There, the Lions were outscored 19-5 over the final five minutes, making just two field goals and one of two free throws.
Salinas tallied a team-high 18 points followed by Gray with 15, Hooker with 13, Jackson with seven, Trent Loftin with six, Clawson with five, and Noe with two points.
The Lions (8-4) are back in action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Abilene Cooper.
