On Saturday, October 15th , approximately 35 people (volunteers, gardeners, and board members) gathered in the arbor at Brownwood Community Garden. They took this opportunity to recognize the volunteers’ dedication to growing produce which is used to feed needy residents in Brown County. Eleven Brownwood Community Garden volunteers logged over 1,853 hours since January and helped grow almost three tons -5,652 pounds – of vegetables!

Local businesses donated special items, gift certificates and merchandise to the volunteers in appreciation of their labors. Sliger’s Market donated two $20 gift certificates. Trees Forever gave two $25 gift certificates. Home Depot provided $50 worth of in-store merchandise. The Lyric Theater ante-upped two Christmas production tickets. Brownwood Community Garden Board Treasurer Jerry Sims gave six Kiwanis Pancake Supper tickets. Yvonekke Beelby, Board Member dished up three embellished hanging fall table decorations and nine Community Garden ceramic mugs. Each mug contained a flowered cupcake as a special thank you for each volunteer.

Jan Green, Board Vice-President, and active volunteer mused, “This is not a one-person operation. We depend on and appreciate our volunteers. While our mission is to feed the hungry with naturally grown produce, provide rental space for residents wishing to garden with natural methods and provide a venue for education on sustainable gardening practices, we also grow friendships. It is a community of like-minded people.”

If you would like to get involved with the Brownwood Community Garden, please call (325) 430 – 8944. The Brownwood Community Garden is located at 1514 Dublin Street, Brownwood, Texas 76801. It is directly behind the Central Texas Opportunities office building. You can follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/brownwoodcommunitygarden. We would love to hear from you!
