The lightest night of action during the regular season takes place Friday with only five games in the BrownwoodNews.com coverage area, including a battle of Brown County between Zephyr and Brookesmith in the six-man ranks, and a District 5-2A Division I clash between Coleman and San Saba.
The following are brief previews of Friday night’s games:
May (4-0) at Burnet Smokin’ for Jesus Christian (1-4)
7:30 p.m. Friday
After an unexpected bye last week due to a cancellation by San Marcos Academy, the Class A Division I No. 2 May Tigers return to the field as they visit Burnet Smoking for Jesus Christian (BSFJC).
The Tigers’ last outing was a 63-34 victory over Class A Division I No. 4 Garden City, which knocked off reigning state champion Westbrook, 46-42, this past Friday.
In the win over Garden City, May finished with 443 yards of total offense, including 363 passing.
Braden Steele completed 13 for 25 passes for 232 yards with four touchdowns, Luke McKenzie was 4 for 7 for 88 yards and three scores, and Ben Harrell connected on all three of his pass attempts for 43 yards and a touchdown.
Leading receivers were Bryson Guerrero with five catches for 117 yards and three touchdowns; McKenzie with four catches for 69 yards and a score; Harrell with three catches for 53 yards and a trip to the end zone; Alexis Mejia with a 42-yard scoring reception; Jackson Easterling with three grabs for 30 yards and a touchdown; Damian Salinas with three snags for 31 yards; and Kross Kenyon hauled in a 20-yard scoring reception.
On the ground, Salinas rushed for 72 yards on 10 carries and Steele tacked on an 8-yard scoring sprint.
Defensively for the Tigers, standouts included Steele (17 tackles, 1 pass defended, 1 TFL), Salinas (15 tackles, 1 fumble caused, 1 TFL), Harrell (14 tackles, 1 TFL), Wyatt Hardy (6 tackles, 1 TFL), Kenyon (4 tackles), Easterling (3 tackles, 1 TFL), Guerrero (3 tackles), McKenzie (2 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 fumble caused, 1 fumble recovery, 1 pass defended), and Mejia (1 tackle).
BSFJC is coming off a 58-44 loss to No. 5 Jonesboro, a District 14 rival of May. The only other public school on BSFJC’s schedule was Cherokee, which dished out a 59-14 defeat in Week 1.
The only win for BSFJC came in Week 3 over Marble Falls Faith, 98-62.
Isaac Legier leads BSFJC with 362 yards of total offense – 196 passing and 164 rushing – per game.
Defensively, Connor Kitchens is generating six tackles per game on average to pace BSFJC.

Blanket (4-1) at Evant (0-4)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The Blanket Tigers are setting their sights on a fifth consecutive victory as they venture to Evant to clash with the winless Elks.
Since a 53-18 season-opening loss to Rising Star, Blanket has bounced back with wins over Bryson (40-12), Eden (50-0), Santa Anna (52-16), and Moran (56-0).
In the homecoming triumph over Moran last week, Blanket manufactured 303 yards of total offense with 288 coming on the ground. Meanwhile, the Tigers gave up just 73 yards of total offense, including negative-5 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Brayden Day rushed for 161 yards rushing and five touchdowns for Blanket, Levi Vazquez contributed 103 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Kannon Kensing scored on a 15-yard carry.
Through the air, Gage Jones completed his lone pass attempt to Ayden Wheeler for a 15-yard touchdown.
Defensive standouts included Day with seven tackles, Kensing and Isaac Smith with six tackles, Vazquez with five tackles and a fumble recovery, and Wheeler also pounced on a loose ball.
Evant’s season has featured losses against Stephenville Faith (64-24), Gorman (61-12), Cherokee (60-6), and Rochelle (66-19).

Zephyr (4-1) at Brookesmith (0-5)
7:30 p.m. Friday
The Zephyr Bulldogs are eyeing their fifth straight win, while the Brookesmith Mustangs are looking to pull off a homecoming night upset and notch their initial victory of the season.
Zephyr was edged by Bronte (44-37) in its season opener but has since secured wins over Veribest (46-0), Waco Eagle Christian Academy (54-6), Lohn (68-6) and Olfen (58-0).
Brookesmith’s season has featured losses to Mullin (38-6), Kopperl (24-8), Mount Calm (46-0), Priddy (46-0), and Blackwell (58-6).
In Zephyr’s most recent outing against Olfen, the Bulldogs allowed just 8 yards of total offense – 42 passing and negative-34 rushing – with three takeaways.
On the offensive end, Zephyr produced 221 yards – 147 rushing and 74 passing.
Jayden Millican rushed for 63 yards and two touchdowns on his only two carries and hurled a 50-yard scoring toss to Karsen Floyd on his lone pass attempt.
Tripp Ballard added 33 yards rushing and two touchdowns, Eathan Gowin rushed for a 28-yard touchdown, Johnny Paul Evans-Rollins tacked on 27 yards and a touchdown, and Aaron Fagan contributed a 1-yard touchdown carry.
Through the air, Rhett Williams tossed a 24-yard pass to Trapper Schoenhals.
Evans-Rollins and Kaden Floyd led the Bulldogs with six tackles apiece followed by Ballard with five, Millican with four, and Karsen Floyd with three takedowns. Evans-Rollins and Cash Whisenhunt intercepted passes, while Millican and Gowin each recorded a safety.

Coleman (4-1, 1-0) at San Saba (4-1, 0-1)
7 p.m. Friday
The Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Class 2A Division I No. 6 Coleman Bluecats are seeking their second straight district victory, while the San Saba Armadillos are looking to rebound from their first loss overall in last week’s 5-2A Division I opener.
Coleman pummeled Goldthwaite, 61-0, as the Bluecats allowed just 32 yards of total offense with three turnovers, while producing 531 yards – 389 rushing and 142 passing.
Ryland Gentry finished with 180 rushing yards and four touchdowns for Coleman, followed by Jadin Jackson with 100 yards and a score, Blaine Bouldin with 44 yards and a trip to the end zone, Dayden Hunter with 36 yards and two touchdowns, and Jaden Espitia with 15 yards and a score on the ground.
Jackson also completed 9 of 13 passes for 142 yards, connecting with Braxton Smith on six receptions for 92 yards. Keaton Beets finished with two catches for 24 yards and Hagen Cavanaugh hauled down a 26-yard reception.
San Saba is coming off a 40-28 setback against Hamilton in which the Armadillos finished with 312 yards of total offense, but rushed for just 67 yards on 25 carries – which had been the Armadillos’ strength during pre-district action.
Quarterback Lance Taylor completed 17 of 25 passes for 245 yards with three touchdowns and one interception and rushed for 25 yards and a score. Tyler Johnson caught 11 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns, while Lane Miller finished with two grabs for 92 yards and scored once. Ethan Gonzales rushed for a team-high 40 yards and chipped in three receptions for 31 yards.
Defensively, Zuri Herrera recorded 13 tackles followed by Winton Lackey with 12, Taylor and Dylan Ware with eight each, Johnson and Jesus Betancourt with seven apiece, and Christian Ramirez with six.
According to Harris Ratings Weekly, Coleman is a 30-point favorite.

De Leon (3-2, 0-1) at Goldthwaite (0-5, 0-1)
7 p.m. Friday
Both the Goldthwaite Eagles and De Leon Bearcats are looking to bounce back from opening losses in District 5-2A Division I action as the two teams cross paths Friday night.
Goldthwaite, which is winless thus far in its first season under head coach Andy Howard, was dealt a 61-0 loss by No. 6 Coleman last week.
The Eagles managed just 32 yards of total offense with three turnovers, while surrendering 531 yards – 389 rushing and 142 passing.
Bryce Brookings connected on 2 of 10 passes for 15 yards with two interceptions. Collin Gardner hauled in a 10-yard reception.
Marcus Stevens was the top rusher for the Eagles with 17 yards and Cutter Campbell tacked on 14 yards.
De Leon was dealt a 49-21 defeat by Bangs, as Dragon Guy Powell rushed for 323 yards and five touchdowns against the Bearcat defense.
Prior to the district opener, De Leon was coming off a 52-7 victory over Hico in which quarterback Heston Jobe completed 9 of 11 passes for 220 yards with three touchdowns, while rushing for 108 yards and two more scores. Kallen McIlvain chipped in 186 rushing yards and two scores on the ground, while leading receivers were Jake Cooper with three catches for 79 yards and a touchdown, and Andrew Coan hauled in two scoring receptions totaling 86 yards.
Defensively, Hico yielded just 249 yards of total offense – all on the ground.
