The City of Brownwood and Keep Brownwood Beautiful supply Brownwood ISD elementary schools with recycling trailers to collect classroom and home recyclables during the school year.
Under the direction of teachers and school staff, students collected recyclable items including aluminum cans, cardboard, magazines, newspaper, # 1 plastic (water and soda bottles), tin cans and white office paper. The items collected were taken to the City of Brownwood Recycling center where they were sorted and then sent to processors who turn the materials into various raw materials to be made into new products.
The BISD elementary schools recycled a total of 35,976 lbs of material during the 2012-2013 school year. Individual campus results are as follows:
Woodland Heights – 21,466 lbs.
Northwest – 7,542 lbs.
East – 4,135 lbs.
Coggin – 2,833 lbs.
Woodland Heights set an initial goal of 18,000 pounds and upon reaching that goal they set another goal of 20,000 pounds. The students are under the direction of school Counselor Kimber Bennett.
