Janie Rose (Hill) Thornhill, 75, was born on May 18, 1947, to Carl and Louise (Grillette) Hill in Abilene, Texas. After a long illness, Janie went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday July 30, 2022.
She was 1965 graduate of Jim Ned High School. Janie went on to study radiology at Hendrick Health School of Radiology.
She married the love of her life, Ralph Thornhill, on January 19, 1973.
Janie’s hands were rarely idle. She enjoyed quilting, stitching quilts with love at the birth of each of her grandchildren. She loved hummingbirds, feeding daily the dozens attracted to the numerous feeders she stocked. And she found great comfort in her faith and the Emmaus Community in which she was active.
Janie retired in 2018 after 45 years working in health care, first as the Director of Sweetwater X-ray Department while still in school and later as the Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Abilene Regional Medical Center.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Louise; sister, Noel Lou Benningfield; brother-in-law, Dave Benningfield; and grandson, Brady Thornhill.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph of Brownwood; and their children, Britton Dean Thornhill Sr. and his wife, Leisa of Tuscola and Alison Denise Thornhill of Abilene; seven grandchildren, Brenden, Caleb, Brittoni, Britton, Jacob, Jadeyn and Luke; and one great-grandson, Blevin; 2 sisters, Carmen Shafer of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and Judy Needham of Coleman; and brother, David Hill of Buffalo Gap. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and her friends.
Funeral Services for Janie will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 6, 2022, Wylie United Methodist Church in Abilene with Jeff Hatcher and Kyle Medlock officiating; burial will follow at Buffalo Gap Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 – 7 p.m. at Midtown Church in Brownwood. Arrangements are under the direction of Blaylock Funeral Home of Brownwood.
The family requests that guests wear bright colors for the service in celebration of Janie’s life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Brown County Prison Ministry at P.O. Box 1031 Brownwood, Texas 78604. This is a nonprofit dear to Janie’s heart that gives new backpacks filled with essentials to inmates released from the TDCJ T.R. Havins Unit.
