NOTE: Throughout the month of July, BrownwoodNews.com is publishing stories daily on 40 standout citizens under the age of 40 making a positive impact and contribution within the Brown County community.
An unforeseen job opportunity presented itself and Jarvis Green has turned it into an online showcase highlighting the progress in Brownwood.
Green, 29, serves as the Digital Media Specialist for the City of Brownwood.
“That involves tending to social media, photography, graphic design and videography,” Green said. “There’s various different avenues pertaining to the City of Brownwood as a government entity, Visit Brownwood for travel, economic development for the BMDD, and things like that.”
Green was unsure what to expect of the position at first, but felt he brought a unique skill set that could flourish.
“Coming into it I had no idea how it was going to pan out, and I didn’t know how rewarding this would end up being until I got in and was told I pretty much had free reign to capture and show off the city in any way I felt was necessary,” Green said. “Being given the freedom to just go out and get photos for specific projects or specific needs, going to events and filming what’s happening in front of me as a spectator myself, it allowed me to give the city a view of itself that it hasn’t seen before.”
Green is a native of Mesquite, attended Hardin-Simmons for four years and eventually took a job at Howard Payne.
“I was at Hardin-Simmons University and went into their graphic design program,” Green said. “They want their students to be well rounded so I got to dabble in photography and found a new love for photography outside of graphic design. After I graduated from Hardin-Simmons there was an opportunity to work as a graphic designer at Howard Payne University in August 2016 and was there for five years. That position gave me the opportunity to explore photography more on top on graphic design. There was a need for videography so I pretty much self taught myself how to film events that were going on at Howard Payne.”
Green looks to continue to enhance his skills in his current position, and display all Brownwood has to offer to an even broader audience in new, innovative ways.
“I didn’t know I was going to enjoy city government working in the position I am as much as I do,” Green said. “This led me to meet others who are like me and see that there is a need for a position like mine in different cities. It’s a really good opportunity and a great way to grow as a graphic designer, photographer and videographer and I’m excited for more opportunities with the City of Brownwood to continue to expand my skills and show off this great town.”
Away from work, Green plays a vital role with Brownwood Community Church.
“I am our communications director so I help run our live stream on Sundays and all of the camera work and graphics for our church,” Green said. “I’m also involved with the youth group as one of our small group leaders. I helped start that youth group at Brownwood Community Church five years ago as the youth leader.”
Green has also assisted in chronicling Brownwood Lions football games.
“Scott Coers reached out to me last year and had a need for some assistance when some people were out,” Green said. “One of his partners was out one game and he asked if I could step in and help film the Brownwood Lions one game. That turned into two games and three games and then I’m filming the playoff game. To hang out with him and film the Brownwood Lions is a great experience. I miss being on the sidelines, I played football through high school and at Hardin-Simmons all four years of college. Being able to experience the game of football from the sidelines with a camera in my hands, it’s a double-win for me. I’m excited to do more of that in the future.”
Green is married to Jordan Jones Green, the daughter of Brownwood Lions football assistant head coach David Jones and his wife Larissa.
“I met her a little over three and a half years ago and we’re getting ready to celebrate our two-year anniversary here in a few weeks,” Green said of his bride.
