A demonstration of the “Adventures in Ice Dyeing” is offered this Saturday, June 25, at 11 a.m., at the Art Center in Downtown Brownwood. The event is free and open to the public.
Ice dyeing is the process of allowing specialized fiber-specific dyes to saturate natural fibers over melting ice. The process is widely used among fiber artists and creates colors and patterns on textiles such as linen or silk that resembles watercolor art.
The demonstration is part of the Art of Fiber exhibit on display through the month of June. Joan Stewart, a charter member of the Brownwood Art Association’s Fiber and Textile Arts group, will demonstrate the process.
“Ice dyeing is one of those amazing, serendipitous techniques that create a unique finish, every time,” Stewart said. “It’s not an exact science, but the end result is a one-of-a-kind textile that can be used in many, many ways.”
Stewart is one of 17 artists whose work is featured at the Art of Fiber exhibit currently on display at the Art Center through June 27. The BAA Fiber and Textile Arts group was formed in March of 2022. The exhibit has received rave reviews and has expanded the BAA’s spectrum of art mediums.
The Art Center, at 215 Fisk Ave. in Downtown Brownwood, is open Monday through Friday, from 2 to 6 p.m., and on weekends and evenings for special events. For further information, call (325) 641-2916, or visit https://brownwoodart.net.
