The Brownwood Lady Lions halted a 12-game skid and captured a victory in their District 6-4A and season finale, as they upended the playoff-bound Stephenville Honeybees, 8-5, Friday night.
The Lady Lions finished the season with a 9-15 overall record and 1-7 mark in district, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004. Despite a rocky campaign overall, head coach Jessica Lynn was pleased with the way the Lady Lions concluded a trying campaign.
“Things didn’t go our way some games and that’s how things are some years,” Lynn said. “We were right there in a handful of games and they don’t go your way, but next year it could be the same thing but in reverse, where all the close games go your way. I’m proud of how resilient they were. It was very important to get this win for these seniors. I’m very proud of everybody.”
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of third inning, the Lady Lions surged in front with four runs during the frame. The inning began with consecutive singles by Chloe Walls, Annie-Klein Allgood and Mia Lopez, the third of which allowed Brownwood to close the gap to 4-3. Cecilia Rodriguez followed with the fourth straight base hit of the inning, which plated Allgood with the tying run. Tynlea Wilson followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that drove in Lopez with the go-ahead run. Chelsey Covey and Hailey Eisenhauer then reached on consecutive errors, which allowed Rodriguez to come home with the sixth run.
Leading 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lopez delivered a two-out, two-RBI single that scored Walls and Jeniffer Romero, who extended the frame with a pair of walks.
Brownwood trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning, but drew even thanks to consecutive singles from Walls and Allgood, followed by an RBI ground out by Rodriguez that plated Walls and a wild pitch that permitted Allgood to come home.
In the circle, Allgood yielded six hits and left three base runners stranded, as Brownwood committed four errors in the field.
“Today we did a great job,” Lynn said. “When we needed a play on defense we made it. When we made errors they hurt us minimally tonight and didn’t cost us four or five runs like they did in the past. On offense, when we needed a hit we got it with runners on, and Annie was throwing really good tonight and got some easy contact to our infielders.”
Friday’s game closed out the high school softball careers for Allgood, Eisenhauer and Marian Soto.
“Each and every one of them brought something unique to the team,” Lynn said. “Annie was a big time leader for us with her pitching and offense. Hailey is quiet, doesn’t say a lot, but did a great job of scooping and snagging some crazy throws at first base. Marian came back from tearing her ACL last year and did a great job in right field and was a good leader.”
