GATESVILLE – The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions track and field teams combined to earn 20 berths into next week’s area meet at Gordon Wood Stadium based on their efforts Monday and Tuesday at the District 6-4A competition.
The Lions earned 11 area berths and finished third in the final team standings with 110 points, while the Lady Lions secured nine berths and came in fourth in the final team tally with 77 points. The top four finishers in each event move on to the 5-4A/6-4A area meet in Brownwood on Friday, April 22.
The Lions captured district championships in four events – Tyse Savage in the 200 meters (21.97); Tobey Yeats in the 110-meter hurdles (15.74); the 4×100 relay team of Jake Jetton, Jordyn Nickerson, Savage, and Jakob Hataway (43.71); and the 4×200 relay team of Jetton, Savage, Brayden Daub, and Nickerson (1:30.75).
Advancing as a runner-up in the 100 meters was Nickerson with a time of 11.15.
Moving on with third-place efforts were Hataway in the 100 meters (11.22), Logan McKibben in the triple jump (41-3), and Weston Burns in the pole vault (11-0).
Punching area tickets in fourth place were Daub in the 100 meters (11.41), Nickerson in the long jump (20-2.5), and Thad Hinds in the high jump (5-10).
Adding points to the Lions’ team total were fifth-place finishers Jetton in the 200 meters (23.38), James Evetts in the 800 meters (2:11.93), and the 4×400 relay team of John Field, Gray Stewardson, Azariah Dillard and Caleb Nix.
Also contributing were Daub in the 200 meters (23.55), Jakson Yoder in the triple jump (40-8) and Damian Sanchez in both the shot put (39-1) and discus (126-9).
Leading the way for the Lady Lions were second-place performances by Kate Tindol in the 200 meters (26.33), Sidney Windham in the 800 meters (2:30.39), the 4×200 relay of Talia Clifton, Braycee Lee, Tindol and Windham (1:52.32), and the 4×400 relay of Windham, Tindol, Kynslee Walker and Lee (4:21.59).
Finishing third to advance was Miranda Northcutt in the 300-meter hurdles (49.41).
Qualifying for area in fourth place were Walker in the 400 meters (1:05.49), Clifton in the 100-meter hurdles (17.04) , Northcutt in the long jump (16-4.25), and the 4×100 relay team of Walker, Lee, Jayme Cottle and Jacklyn Lewis (53.76).
Also chipping in points to the Lady Lions team total were Northcutt with a fifth-place effort in the triple jump (32-1.5), and Abrie Felux, who came in sixth in the high jump (4-10).
Stephenville won both the boys and girls team district titles.
The Yellow Jackets generated 254 points followed by host Gatesville (167), Brownwood, Lampasas (45) and Glen Rose (38).
Meanwhile, the Honeybees finished with 200 points trailed by Glen Rose (168), Gatesville (123.5), Brownwood and Lampasas (45.5).
In JV action, the Lions came in fourth in the final team standings while the Lady Lions were fifth.
