LAMPASAS – The Brownwood Lions loaded the bases in four separate innings, but scored just once and left 12 runners stranded as they remained winless in District 6-4A baseball action after a 4-1 loss at Lampasas Tuesday night.
“That’s our MO right now. We get opportunities and we don’t cash in on them,” said Lions third-year head coach Bryan Harris, whose team has left 23 runners on base through two district outings. “Right now, honestly confidence is the name of the game with everyone, top to bottom. It’s tough to get things going when you’re not confident at the plate. We let them of the hook and it gave them confidence and momentum and we could never get it back.”
Lampasas (2-11, 1-1), which snapped an 11-game losing streak, scratched across three runs in the bottom of the third inning and added an insurance run in the fourth. The lone run for the Lions (2-8-1, 0-2) crossed the plate in the top of the sixth inning.
Brownwood loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning on consecutive base hits by David Turner, Logan Posey and Jordyn Nickerson, but did not score. With one out in the third, Case Markham was hit by a pitch, Cole Miller singled and Gavin Brandstetter reached on an error, but a double play ended the threat. With two down in the fifth, Miller was plunked, Brandstetter singled and Turner, but again the Lions were denied.
Then in the top of the sixth, Nickerson led off with a walk, Justin Valdez reached on an infield single, and a one-out error during Jakob Hataway’s at-bat allowed Nickerson to cross the plate. Markham followed with an infield single to again fill the sacks, but the Lions could do no more damage against Lampasas winning pitcher Tak Stinnett – who gave up six hits, beaned three batters, walked two and struck out seven.
On the mound for the Lions, Brandstetter worked the first five innings and gave up four runs – one earned – on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Turner tossed an inning of scoreless relief with a strikeout. The Lions defense committed three errors, which aided in three unearned runs crossing the plate.
Aden Rascoe’s two-out, two-RBI double in the bottom of the third inning proved Lampasas with its second and third runs Jonas Anderson scored on an error. Nate Borchardt chipped in an RBI single in the fourth.
Brownwood will be back in action at 7 p.m. Friday as it hosts Gatesville, seeking its first league win.
