The Brownwood Lady Lions completed a District 4-4A sweep of Graham Friday night at Gordon Wood Stadium, knocking off the Lady Blues for a third time this year, 7-0.
“I think they actually played really well together,” said Lady Lions second-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “We played a tough game on Tuesday against Stephenville so a bunch of them were beat up but we came out and gave our best effort and I think it showed on the field. I’m proud of the way they started this third round of district.”
The Lady Lions (11-4-2, 5-2) jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead and coasted to the finish.
Molly Oliver opened the scoring with the first of her three goals, thanks to an assist from Kennedi Johnson. Ibis Alvarado then found the net ahead of back-to-back goals by Johnson. Ataleigh Constancia rounded out the first half scoring with an assist from Watts Jones.
In the second half, Oliver scored again with 31:57 remaining and tacked on the final goal at the 7:43 mark.
What stood out most to Mosqueda, however, was the defensive performance.
“Our defense got the shutout and the last time we played Graham in the second round it was 8-1,” Mosqueda said. “We gave up a PK late in that game, and I think they knew I wanted the shutout today. That’s mentality we have to have going into the playoffs.”
The Lady Lions conclude the regular season with a 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 11 home date against Mineral Wells and a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15 road game at Stephenville.
“During the second round of district all of our games got better,” Mosqueda said. “We doubled our score against Graham, did almost the same against Mineral Wells, and against Stephenville we played a lot better against them at home. I’m really pleased with the way the girls are playing right now so if keep that mentality through the third round of district and into the playoffs, that will be huge for us.”
