Playing for the first time since Feb. 1, the Brownwood Lady Lions overcame a sluggish start to post a 3-0 victory over the Graham Lady Blues Friday at Gordon Wood Stadium in the District 4-4A soccer opener for both teams.
“We started off slower than we’re used. I couldn’t tell if it was nerves or that we haven’t been playing too many games,” said Lady Lions second-year head coach Alexis Mosqueda. “It could have been either, but I’m glad they got it going. As soon as we got that first goal we started going and the girls started working as a team. As long as they’re working as a team, that’s our main goal and what we’re focused on.”
Addison Pesina scored the only goal Brownwood (7-2-2, 1-0) would need with 20:54 left in the first half, thanks to an assist from Watts Jones.
“Watts had a good cross ball right across the net and all Addie to do was tap it in,” Mosqueda said. “That’s all it takes as long as we have cross balls at the net all night.”
Just 3:02 later, the Lady Lions added an insurance goal as Kennedi Johnson scored off an assist by Adryanna Huerta. Brownwood tacked on its last goal with 3:31 left before halftime as Jones connected with Molly Oliver, who found the back of the net.
With a comfortable halftime advantage, the objective for the Lady Lions in the second half was to keep Graham off the scoreboard, which they achieved.
“Our goal ending the game was to get the shutout, and the girls worked well together today to do that,” Mosqueda said.
The Lady Lions are back in action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday as they host Mineral Wells.
