RICHLAND SPRINGS – A fire that started around 10:30 a.m. Thursday was still smoldering at 5 p.m. Thursday, after destroying two buildings in downtown Richland Springs.
Mayor Johnny Reeves stated Thursday that the mercantile building and old city hall were complete losses.
“We had a fire start over here mid-morning, and it started in the mercantile building, and it completely engulfed it and the building next to it, the old city hall, it totally destroyed it, wiped it out completely,” Reeves said. “We had a lot of money tied up in stuff in there and we lost all that too.”
Reeves stated there we no injuries.
“Thank God nobody was hurt,” he said. “We had fire departments from Elm Grove, San Saba, here in Richland, and they fought it and put no telling how many gallons of water on it. But they were just trying to contain it. It was already out of control.”
A cause of the fire was unknown as of 5 p.m. Thursday.
“I don’t know what caused it, but it sure did wipe out a lot of the block on that south side,” Reeves said.
