Henry Norwell Chisholm of Brownwood, Texas passed away on January 18, 2022, peacefully in his home at the age of 92. Henry was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 27,1929 to the Reverend John and Jean (Stewart) Chisholm. Henry served as an ordained minister in the Church of Scotland in Scotland and the Bahamas for 20 years before relocating to Lubbock, TX in 1973 with his wife and three sons. At that time, he transferred to the Presbyterian Church USA and engaged in doctoral studies at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, while serving as pastor at Grace Presbyterian Church in Lubbock, TX.
In 1979, he was called to serve Union Presbyterian Church in Brownwood, TX as pastor. During his time as pastor, with a focus to engage the congregation in work beyond itself, the Pearl Griffin Memorial Latchkey Program was started in the church building and through the Ministerial Alliance, a Community Soup Kitchen came into being. As an overseas congregational mission project, Rev. Dr. Chisholm was also granted time to take a position as an adjunct professor at the Presbyterian Seminary in Guatemala where he visited annually to teach Group Dynamics in their master’s program. To successfully facilitate this work, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish at Howard Payne University.
In 1993, he retired from his tenure with Union Presbyterian Church, though continued to serve through filling pulpit vacancies in various Presbyterian congregations in Texas including Borger, Ballinger, Stamford, Haskell, Coleman, Cross Plains, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Abilene, as well as a year in Whitlash, Montana.
Henry was a lifelong learner and was always fixing cars, building or remodeling homes, or studying something new. He had a good sense of humor, enjoyed hot summer days on a boat, travel trailering with his loving wife, and reading a wide variety of books. He never remained idle for long, even if that meant mowing a yard which did not really need it. He (notoriously) never made it through a movie before falling asleep.
His sense of humor, sage advice, and constant willingness to lend a helping hand will be greatly missed. Henry leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Moyra (Boyd) Chisholm; brother Archibald Chisholm of Nairn, Scotland; son Kenneth Chisholm and husband Jeff Womack of Cookeville, Tennessee; son Andrew and wife Delicia (Ochoa) Chisholm of Brownwood, Texas; and grandson Cameron Chisholm and fiancé Courtney Nguyen of Houston, Texas. He is preceded in death by parents John and Jean (Norwell) Chisholm of Moneydie, Scotland; and his son Stewart Chisholm of Los Angeles, California.
A Celebration of Life will be held February 12, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Union Presbyterian Church in Brownwood, TX. His ashes will be interred privately at Cedar Point Cemetery in Brown County, TX.
