Howard Payne University’s Elaina Buchanan made the eventual game-winning basketball with three second remaining to defeat McMurry University 85-83 in overtime Saturday afternoon in conference action.
With the game tied at 83-83 with five seconds left in overtime, HPU lobbed in a sideline pass to Elaina Buchanan scoring the game winning layup with three seconds remaining on the clock.
With two HPU players fouled out late in the game, HPU’s Trynadee Greenwell was huge for the Lady Jackets down the stretch scoring the 10 of the Lady Jackets last 12 points in the game.
Despite being outrebounded 41-27 in the game, the Lady Jackets shot 51.7% from the field and 73.9% from the free-throw line. McMurry hit 49.3% of its shots from the field but was only 10 of 22 (45.5%) from the free-throw line.
HPU’s Bria Neal led all scorers with 20 points on 8 of 9 free-throw shooting. Salina Ali finished with 18 points, six assists and five rebounds. Greenwell and Lily Janek each added 16 points. Buchanan was 6 of 7 from the field including the game winner while grabbing six rebounds.
McMurry was led by Distany Matthews with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
Howard Payne improves to 4-12 overall and 2-9 in American Southwest Conference action. McMurry stands at 0-14 overall and 0-9 in league play. The Lady Jackets will be at home next week Thursday against LeTourneau and Saturday versus UT Dallas.
