The Brownwood Police Department issued the following press release Tuesday afternoon:
On Sunday, November 21, 2021, at approximately 8:45pm, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2300 block of Berkley St. regarding a report of a missing person. The caller was not at the location but was concerned for her adult daughter who was pregnant and out on foot. The caller was concerned that a domestic disturbance may have occurred.
When officers arrived at the location, they discovered the missing female sitting on the curb close to the residence. Given the time of day and unknown circumstances, the female was transported to her parents’ location. An investigation commenced and it was learned that a domestic disturbance occurred between the female and her boyfriend who was later identified as 27-year-old John Scott Lee Dyer of Brownwood.
The victim explained that she and Dyer were arguing throughout the day while at the home they shared. Dyer demanded the female leave the residence. The female walked to Coggin Park where eventually, Dyer told her to come home and give up her cell phone. When she arrived home, she eventually went into the bedroom to remove herself from his presence.
After a few minutes, Dyer entered the room and pulled the female off the bed and onto the floor then placed his knee on her neck and head; occasionally banging her head against the floor and impeding her breathing. The victim believed she was going to lose consciousness and became dizzy and lightheaded. Dyer eventually stood up and yelled for her to leave the home before he shot her. Dyer produced a pistol and pointed it at the victim’s head while pushing her toward the door.
When officers identified Dyer at the residence, he provided information to corroborate the victim’s explanation of events. Dyer was arrested and charged with Assault/Family Violence, Impeding Breathing as well as Aggravated Assault/Family Violence with a Deadly Weapon.
