LUBBOCK – The Brownwood Lady Lions placed fifth as a team at the Region I-4A cross country meet Monday morning at Mae Simmons Park, one spot shy of advancing to the Class 4A state meet.
The top four teams and top 10 individuals move on to state, which will be held at Nov. 6 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
The District 6-4A champion Lady Lions garnered 169 points which left them behind regional champion Canyon (60 points), Bridgeport (89), Argyle (100) and Dumas (129).
Sophomore Emma Stegemoller led the Brownwood effort with a 24th-place effort of 13:13.1 trailed by freshmen Sidney Windham (29th, 13:20), Braycee Lee (46th, 13:35.4), Talia Craff (50th, 13:36.1), Kate Tindol (76th, 13:58.3), Miranda Northcutt (77th, 13:58.5), and Kylea Karnes (95th, 14:24.2).
The top individual was Canyon’s Abree Winfrey who was clocked at 11:59.05.
In Region I-4A boys action, Brownwood Lion junior Caleb Nelson came in 66th overall in a time of 18:19.1.
San Elizario’s Christopher Moreno won the regional title in a time of 15:40.9 while state qualifying teams included Canyon (85), San Elizario (97), Big Spring (117), and Argyle (126).
