In a battle that will likely determine the District 6-4A tennis champion, the Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions came up short on their home court against reigning league winner Gatesville, 14-5, Thursday afternoon.
“Their No. 1 girl is the Class 4A state runner-up from last year and their No. 1 boy placed at regionals last year,” said Brownwood tennis head coach Crystal Blazek. “They are solid, but if you look at the scores in the actual matches were right there with them with the exception of a few. We just have to find a way to pull those out. We will bounce back and be ready for Lampasas on Saturday.”
Brownwood tallied wins Thursday in the mixed doubles match as Peter Le and Tatum Dehart upended Dayne Zacha and Olivia Walker, 6-1, 6-1; the No. 3 boys doubles team of Taevion Nickerson and Wesley Goodrich topped Jesse Strange and Tyler Hutts, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8; No. 4 boys single River Prado downed Carlo Martinez, 7-6, 7-5; No. 5 boys single Wallace trumped Hutts, 6-4, 4-6, 14-12; and No. 3 girls single Dehart knocked off Julee Sun, 6-3, 5-7, 10-3.
The Lions and Lady Lions (7-4, 1-1) venture to 6-4A rival Lampasas at 9 a.m. Saturday.
