In a rematch of the 2020 Class A Division I state championship game, the No. 1 May Tigers – according to sixmanfootball.com – and No. 2 Sterling City Eagles will cross paths for the third time in 12 months at 7 p.m. Friday.
May (1-0) is coming off a 51-6 win over then-No. 2, now-No. 10 Borden County, while Sterling City (1-0) escaped with a 56-42 opening night triumph over Garden City.
In the Tigers’ victory last week, May produced 257 yards – 188 rushing and 69 passing – offensively, while the defense created four Borden County turnovers and returned one for a touchdown.
Kaden Halk rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns, Avery Williford added 77 yards and a pair of end zone trips, Blake Harrell chipped in 22 yards and scored once and Damian Salinas finished with 7 yards.
Through the air, Harrell completed 2 of 5 passes for 45 yards and a touchdown, while Luke McKenzie connected on 2 of 3 passes for 24 yards.
Kaysen King hauled in a 28-yard touchdown reception while Harrell (17 yards), Brian Kunkel (17 yards) and Halk (7 yards) also made receptions.
Defensive standouts included Kunkel (9 tackles, 1 fumble caused, 1 fumble recovered), Salinas (8 tackles, 1 fumble caused, 1 fumble recovered), Williford (4 tackles, 2 fumbles recovered, 1 returned for a touchdown), King (4 tackles), Halk (3 tackles, 2 passes defended), and McKenzie (3 tackles).
In Sterling City’s win, the Eagles trailed 30-28 at halftime and 36-34 through three quarters. Knotted at 42 with 6:30 left, Johnathan Monreal scored on a 13-yard carry to push Sterling City in front. Then, with 2:25left, Monreal scored on another 13-yard run for the final 14-point margin.
Kas Johnson rushed for 253 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Sterling City effort.

Brookesmith (0-1) at Abilene TLCA (0-1)
7:30 p.m. Thursday
In a game added to their schedule Sunday night, the Brookesmith Mustangs will venture to Abilene TLCA in search of their first victory of the season – and first under the direction of head coach Todd Lawdermilk.
Brookesmith (0-1) was dealt a 41-12 loss by Veribest in its first game, while Abilene TLCA (0-1) was on the short end of a 56-6 decision against Woodson.
The Mustangs produced 242 total yards – 145 passing and 97 rushing – while yielding 296 yards – 192 on the ground and 104 through the air – to Veribest.
Tristen Slayton rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown and also caught a team-high nine passes for 82 yards for the Mustangs. Conner Heard completed 16 of 22 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown, caught by Kyler Cantu who finished with two grabs for 29 yards.
Blayzon Walker added 38 yards on the ground and caught two passes for 4 yards, Grant Featherson added three receptions for 30 yards, and Nathaniel Ruiz picked up 2 yards on the ground.
Against Woodson, TLCA finished with 130 total yards – 75 passing and 55 rushing.
Jonathan Kirk completed 4 of 14 passes for 75 yards and one touchdown – a 50-yarder to Juan Perez. Kirk also rushed for a team-high 44 yards.

The Blanket Tigers will look to build on their season-opening victory as they hit the road for the first under head coach Casey Mund to tangle with the Gustine Tigers.
Blanket (1-0) rolled past Bryson, 51-6, in Week 1, while Gustine (0-1) was edged by Rising Star, 57-50.
Brayden Day led the charge for Blanket with 192 yards on the ground and touchdown carries of 2, 11, and 54 yards, along with a 50-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Levi Vazquez tacked on 116 rushing yards and three touchdowns covering 21, 24, and 35 yards. Carlos Morales contributed 83 yards on the ground, including a 27-yard scoring sprint.
Through the air, Brenner Varner completed his lone pass attempt for 28 yards to Ayden Wheeler.
Leading the Tigers’ defensive effort against Bryson (0-1) were Day (6.5 tackles), Morales (4 tackles, 1 fumble recovery), Hayden Rodgers (5 tackles), Vazquez (3 tackles), Wheeler (2 tackles), Adam McLaughlin (2.5 tackles, 1 fumble recovery), Issac Smith (1.5 tackles), and Mark Yeats (1 tackle).
Players to watch for Gustine include Junior Lopez, Steve Garcia, Josue Butrion, Rodrigo Ramirez, Yahir Briones, and Yahir Torquemada. The Tigers return eight of 11 lettermen including all six starters on each side of the ball.
Gustine was picked to finish fourth in the five-team District 11-A Division I by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

The Zephyr Bulldogs will attempt to bounce back from a narrow opening-night loss as they welcome the Veribest Falcons in their home opener.
Zephyr (0-1) scored the first two touchdowns but was unable to hold the lead in a 21-18 opening loss to Sidney last week. Meanwhile, Veribest cruised past Brookesmith by a 41-12 count.
Zephyr owned a 271-253 edge in total yards against Sidney, thanks in part to 207 yards and a touchdown on the ground by Jayden Millican. Eathan Gowin connected with Corbin Brown on an 11-yard scoring toss, caught three passes from Millican for 16 yards, and rushed for 42 yards and a touchdown from 35 yards out.

Richland Springs (0-1) was upended by Marble Falls Faith, 62-34,in Week 1, while Austin Royals (1-0) flattened Living Rock Academy, 61-6.
Austin Royals finished with 233 total yards – 189 rushing and 44 passing – in its opening triumph.
Bo Pogue rushed for 104 yards and four touchdowns, David Garcia-Gonzalez chipped in 71 yards with a trip to the end zone, Preston Day passed for 44 yards and with a 37-yard touchdown to Joseph Wilson.

The Cross Plains Buffaloes seek two straight wins to open the season, while the Goldthwaite Eagles are hoping their home turf brings better fortunes Friday night.
Cross Plains (1-0) notched a 33-14 victory over Menard last week, while Goldthwaite (0-1) was knocked off by Class 2A Division I No. 3 Crawford, 35-6.
The Buffaloes raced out to a 25-0 halftime lead last week as Cross Plains overcame four turnovers and finished with 388 yards of total offense – 222 rushing and 166 passing. Defensively, Cross Plains yielded 263 yards – 184 rushing and 79 passing – to Menard (0-1), but created five takeaways.
Cason Allen passed for 166 yards and two touchdowns – 76 yards to Ryan Hopkins and 39 yards to Asher Moses, who finished with a team-best four grabs for 86 yards.
Hopkins also rushed for 108 yards and scored on carries of 25 and 64 yards, while Noah Moses led the Buffaloes with 154 yards on the ground including an 87-yard scoring sprint.
Defensively, Spade Koenig and Ryan Reed intercepted passes, while Riley Conlee and Alex Parker recovered fumbles. A third fumble recovery was credited to the team.
Goldthwaite finished with 249 yards of total offense – all on the ground – and committed one turnover against Crawford, while allowing 314 yards – 198 rushing and 116 passing – and creating a takeaway.
Jackson Patrick led Goldthwaite with 92 yards on the ground trailed by Seth Gardner with 53 yards and a touchdown, Aaron Anzua with 45, Lane Evans with 26 and Luke Sanderson with 21.

After posting 24 points in just one quarter of a weather-shortened season-opening victory, the Coleman Bluecats hit the road Friday and look to hand Anson its first defeat.
Though Coleman played just over 12 minutes, the Bluecats did plenty of damage in a shutout victory over Miles. Meanwhile, Anson upended Winters by a 24-6 count.
Coleman scored on a 71-yard Colt McFadden run, a 55-yard pass from Jadin Jackson to Braxton Smith, a 22-yard interception return by Smith and a 26-yard Christian Villeda field goal.
The Bluecats generated 198 yards – 119 rushing and 79 passing – on just 10 plays while limiting Miles to negative-5 yards on 13 snaps.
McFadden led the ground game with 71 yards followed by Jackson with 33, Dayden Hunter with 8, Brent Bouldin with 7 and Ryland Gentry with 5 yards.
Jackson also completed a 24-yard pass to Denver Hunter.
In Anson’s win, The Tigers chalked up 281 total yards – 179 rushing and 102 passing – against Winters, while giving up just 161 yards.
Quarterback Dylyn Pyle completed 18 of 31 passes for 102 yards while rushing for a team-high 77 yards and two touchdowns. Corey Layne caught seven passes for 38 yards, Stryker Dillard added five grabs for 26 yards, Elias Ramos rushed for 27 yards, Riley Pippin picked up 25 on the ground and Mason Hagler finished with 16 yards and a rushing score.

The San Saba Armadillos are looking to shake off a rocky start to the season as they host Rogers in their home opener Friday night.
San Saba (0-1) was toppled by Eldorado, 42-20, last week, while Rogers (0-1) was downed by Little River-Academy, 38-28.
San Saba quarterback Lance Taylor completed 28 of 60 passes for 403 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also rushing for 26 yards. Wesley Lackey grabbed 10 catches for 203 yards and two scores, while other receivers getting into the act included Reagan Mejia (6-65), Franco Franco (4-46), Drake Bryant (4-27), Tyler Johnson (2-37), and Weston Oliver (1-25).
Tegan Saiz chipped in a touchdown on the ground and finished with 17 yards.
Defensively, San Saba forced six turnovers as standouts included Lackey (14 tackles, 3 for loss, 1 sack, 1 INT), Zuri Herrera (11 tackles, 1 for loss, 1 INT), Leonel Aranda (8 tackles, 1 for loss, 1 sack), Mejia (5 tackles, 1 INT), and Franco (4 tackles, 1 INT).
Rogers led Little River-Academy, 20-17, at one point before surrendering three straight touchdowns to the Bumblebees to fall in an 18-point hole.
Ivan Lopez scored the first two touchdowns for Rogers on runs of 2 and 5 yards, then Christian Riley ripped off a 60-yard scoring sprint ahead of a 3-yard plunge into the end zone by Riley Dolgener.

The Jake Escobar coaching era at Comanche began with a home loss, but the Indians are hoping to find success as they journey to Brady Friday night.
Comanche (0-1) was stifled by Mason in a 34-13 defeat last week, while Brady (1-0) strolled to a 38-6 victory over San Angelo TLCA.
The Indians were limited to 187 yards of total offense – 190 on the ground and negative -3 passing – by the Mason (1-0) defense.
Luke Wilson rushed for 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns to pace the Indians offense. Miguel Martinez chipped in 33 yards on the ground and Hudson Welch rushed for 15.
Through the air, Welch completed 1 of 9 passes, with Wilson making the lone reception for a 3-yard loss.
In Brady’s win, the Bulldogs rushed for 367 of their 454 yards of total offense. J.D. Barra compiled 175 yards and three touchdowns while Hayden Baronet chipped in 172 yards and two scores, while also passing for 87 yards,
Defensively, the Bulldogs forced four turnovers and yielded just 134 yards.
