Coleman’s Abbi Allen finished with 12 points, five steals and three blocks to earn MVP honors and pace the South All-Stars to a 52-39 victory over the North Saturday at Warren Gym in the Big Country FCA All-Star Girls Basketball Classic.
Tied at 24 at halftime, the South built as large as a 17-point lead en route to securing the victory. May’s Roberta Robinette scored three points and Brownwood’s Lindsey Larose added two points to the winning tally.
Also scoring for the South were San Saba’s Brighton Adams with a team-high 13 points; San Saba’s Courtnee Cash with five points and four steals; Sonora’s Skylar Harris and Wylie’s Emma Melton with four points each; Wall’s Falyn Guy with three points; and Goldthwaite’s Taylor Rountree and Wylie’s Morgan Travis with two points apiece.
The South shot 33 percent (17 of 51) from the floor, 16 percent (3 of 19) at the three-point line, and 71 percent (15 of 21) at three throw line. Though the South was outrebounded 49-37, it created 27 North turnovers.
For the North, Merkel’s Alyssa White scored a team-high 10 points followed by Stephenville’s Alee McClendon and Colorado City’s Mia Monroe with seven each; Eula’s Presley Vernon with six; Stephenville’s Jade Wilson with four; Lipan’s Kaylee Little and Santo’s Cassidy Walker with two each; and Eula’s Carter Gomez with one point.
The North hit 21 percent (12 of 57) of its shots, 13 percent (2 of 16) of its treys, and 57 percent (13 of 23) of its free throws.
Trailing 26-25 with 6:53 left in the third period, the South scored 12 of the next 14 points over a 4:28 stretch to open a commanding 37-28 advantage, which continued to balloon the rest of the contest.
