Valedictorian Mirian Marquez and Salutatorian Tyler Simpson

BLANKET – Mirian Marquez is the valedictorian and Tyler Simpson is the salutatorian for Blanket High School’s Class of 2021.

Blanket will hold its graduation at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 21 at the high school football field.

Marquez said of earning valedictorian honors, “I feel accomplished, I’m happy to be valedictorian of my class. I think it was pretty close, so I was surprised.”

Marquez plans to attend the Galen College of Nursing in San Antonio as she said, “I want to help others.”

During high school, Marquez took part in basketball, tennis, track, UIL and National Honor Society.

Five to 10 years down the road, Marquez intends to “hopefully be in the nursing field and maybe going back to school to do more.”

She is the daughter of Raphael Marquez and Cecilia Marquez.

Simpson said of finishing as the salutatorian of the Class of ’21, “If feels good, it feels like I did something.”

Simpson is headed to Angelo State as earlier this year he signed a national letter of intent to play football. He also intends to pursue a degree in accounting or business.

“I really like it, it’s fun to me for some reason,” Simpson said, adding that his favorite class was financial math.

Long term, Simpson wants to, “be a fishing guide. My dad bought a boat last year and we go down to the coast a lot. It’s fun, I love the ocean, the fish and the saltwater, it’s amazing.”

He is the son of Justin and Kimberly Simpson.

Both students stated Coach Monty Jones was their favorite in the classroom.
