HPU baseball wins season finale over Sul Ross, 11-10

ALPINE – The Howard Payne University baseball team scored three runs in the final two innings to post the 11-10 American Southwest Conference victory over Sul Ross State University in the series and season finale Sunday afternoon.

Three HPU players recorded multiple hits with Joey Villarreal leading the way going 3-for-5 at the plate. Luke Brock was 2-for-6 with four RBI and Jonathan McKay went 2-for-5 with three RBI in the game.

Down 4-0 after the first inning, HPU’s Jonathan McKay doubled with the bases loaded scoring three. 3-4 Sul Ross.

The Jackets took a 6-5 lead in the third with a RBI triple by Luke Brock, a groundout by Rylee McGee to score Brock and then a throwing error by the pitcher brining home Jared Pollock.

HPU tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth on a passed ball allowing McKay to score and a fielding error by the short stop allowing Carson Wert to score.

With single runs by Sul Ross in the sixth and seventh, it was a two-run eighth and a single run in the ninth that gave the Jackets the 11-10 victory.

Brock singled to center field to score two runs in the eighth and it was a Joey Villarreal fielder’s choice in the ninth that scored McKay that gave the Jackets the 11-10 advantage.

Sul Ross State pitchers hit six HPU batters and each team recorded 12 hits and five fielding errors in the game.

Howard Payne used seven pitchers recording 11 total strikeouts as a group. Bryant Chambers went 3.2 innings in the start allowing eight runs on seven hits. Landon Blass got the win in relief throwing the bottom of the eighth and striking out two. Harlee Biggs recorded the save throwing the bottom of the ninth and striking out two. Nolyn Box, Ricky Mays, Preston Taylor and Dean Evans also saw time in relief on the mound for the Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets finished with a 9-24 overall record and a 5-22 mark in ASC action.
