HPU baseball splits pair with Schreiner

The Howard Payne University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Schreiner University 9-3 and 5-8 Tuesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

Game One
Howard Payne used a five-run third and a three-run sixth to secure the 9-3 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

HPU’s Carson Wert finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in. Gage Keate was 2-for-2 for the Jackets in the game.

Gary Blair went 2.0 innings in the start for HPU allowing one run on two hits. Jasen Hollingsworth picked up the win in relief allowing one hit in one inning of work. Koby Hasty, Dean Evans, and Preston Taylor each saw time on the mound in relief.

Game Two
The Jackets committed three errors in game two of the double header leading to a 8-5 outcome for the Mountaineers.

Down 7-0 at one point, Howard Payne scored five runs in the final three innings, three in the fifth and two in the seventh, to make the game close in the final.

Derek Gifford led the Jackets going 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in.

In one inning of work, Nick Diaz recorded the loss in the start for HPU allowing two runs on one hit and striking out two. Cyah Daniel, Ty Garner, Reese Glynn, Harlee Biggs, Landon Blass, adn Xavier Haines each saw time in relief for the Yellow Jackets.

Howard Payne will be on the road next weekend at Concordia University Texas in Austin for a three-game conference series.
