Brownwood tennis secures second district title, third regional berth

The Brownwood High tennis team secured a third regional berth and second District 6-4A championship as Lady Lions Lillian Jonescue and Aaliyah Uvalle defeated the Lampasas tandem of Lampasas’ Valdez/Clements, 6-3, 7-5, for the league’s girls doubles title Wednesday morning.

Jonescue and Uvalle join the mixed doubles team of Peter Le and Victoria Ramos as district champions, while Mo Goff advanced to regionals with a second-place effort in boys singles.

The Region I-4A tennis tournament will be held at Texas Tech’s McLeod Tennis Center April 26-29.

Jonescue and Uvalle downed Edmond/Moran of Gatesville, 6-1, 6-0, and Flores/Moyer of Lampasas, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the final.

Le and Ramos defeated Warren/Sun of Gatesville, 6-0, 6-4 in Tuesday’s final after knocking off Martinez/L.Mitchell of Gatesville, 6-3, 6-0, and Smith/Jones of Stephenville, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to advance.

Goff fell to Sloan Early of Gatesville in Tuesday’s final, 6-1, 7-6 [6] after defeating Alex Herrera of Glen Rose, 6-0, 6-0, and Alex Scott of Gatesville, 6-3, 6-7 [4], 6-4 following a first-round bye.

The Lions and Lady Lions both finished second in the final team standings.
